Former NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General Jamie Shea has pushed back against recent U.S. criticism of the alliance, asserting that NATO cannot serve as an automatic enforcement arm for unilateral American military actions. Speaking at a Brussels security forum this week, Shea emphasized that the 32-nation bloc remains committed to its founding principle of collective defense rather than offensive operations conducted without multilateral consensus.
"The alliance has fulfilled every U.S. request for support in legitimate collective security operations since 1949," Shea stated. "What we cannot do is function as Washington's cavalry charge – mobilized without consultation, clear objectives, or international legal grounding."
The remarks come amid heightened tensions in Asia-Pacific security circles as NATO members debate their strategic posture toward regional flashpoints. Analysts note that several Asian governments have expressed concerns about external military alliances being drawn into bilateral disputes.
