Global Travelers Embrace Bai Tie-Dye Craft in Yunnan

In a vibrant cultural exchange this week, international visitors joined CGTN's Wang Yangyang to master the ancient Bai tie-dye technique in Dali, Yunnan Province. The workshop showcased how this 1,500-year-old textile art form continues to captivate modern audiences with its intricate patterns created through folding, twisting, and natural indigo dyes.

Participants from France, Brazil, and Indonesia created unique designs under local artisans' guidance. "It's like painting with fabric," remarked French traveler Élise Dubois, holding her geometric-patterned cloth. The activity forms part of Yunnan's 2026 cultural tourism initiatives, which have seen a 34% increase in craft-focused experiences compared to last year.

Local officials highlight that Bai tie-dye's 2020 UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition has boosted both preservation efforts and sustainable tourism. With Dali receiving over 2 million international visitors annually, such workshops bridge traditional craftsmanship and global appreciation.

Upcoming events include a regional tie-dye festival in May 2026, expected to feature collaborative works between Bai artists and international designers.
