Underwater Robot Challenge Boosts Marine Conservation in Greater Bay Area

The first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Marine Underwater Robot Application Challenge concluded successfully in Zhuhai last week, marking a leap forward in marine protection technology. Held from March 28-29, the competition tested 32 teams through simulated real-world challenges including low-visibility operations and strong current navigation.

Participants demonstrated cutting-edge solutions for underwater infrastructure inspection, debris removal, and aquaculture net maintenance – critical skills as coastal cities intensify sustainable ocean development. The event aligns with China's 2026 marine ecological protection goals, creating a testing ground for technologies that could revolutionize deep-sea exploration and environmental monitoring.

Organizers emphasized the competition's role in fostering cross-regional collaboration between Guangdong and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. "This challenge accelerates practical applications of marine robotics," said event coordinator Dr. Li Wei. "Next year's edition will expand to include international teams."
