China's aviation sector reached a new milestone yesterday as the Changying-8, the country's first 7-tonne-class unmanned logistics aircraft, completed its maiden flight in Zhengzhou. The breakthrough comes as Asian e-commerce demand surges, with the drone's 3.5-tonne payload capacity and 3,000-kilometer range positioning it to revolutionize regional supply chains.
Developed through a collaboration between state-owned aerospace enterprises and private tech firms, the aircraft represents the Chinese mainland's latest advancement in intelligent logistics infrastructure. Aviation analyst Li Wei told KhabarAsia: "This enables same-day delivery connectivity across major economic corridors – from Chongqing to Jakarta, or Shanghai to Singapore."
The drone's operational debut aligns with growing investments in automated cargo networks across Asia, particularly for medical supplies delivery to remote areas and time-sensitive manufacturing components transport. Industry observers note its potential to complement existing high-speed rail and maritime routes while reducing road congestion.
Authorities confirm the platform will undergo final certification testing this month, with commercial operations expected to commence by Q3 2026. The development comes as ASEAN nations and the Chinese mainland intensify cross-border smart logistics cooperation under the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership framework.
