Pakistan is strategically positioned to mediate escalating tensions between Iran and the United States, former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi stated during an interview at the Boao Forum for Asia this week. The remarks follow current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent affirmation of Islamabad’s intent to foster dialogue between the two nations.
Abbasi emphasized Pakistan’s “unique diplomatic relationships” with both countries and its historical role as a neutral actor in regional disputes. “Conflict resolution requires trust, and Pakistan has consistently maintained balanced ties,” he told CGTN reporter Chen Tong. The former leader highlighted cross-border economic initiatives and shared security concerns as potential foundations for de-escalation.
The Boao Forum, held annually in China’s Hainan province, has become a key platform for Asian leaders to address geopolitical challenges. This year’s discussions focused heavily on energy security and trade stability amid global uncertainties.
Analysts note Pakistan’s mediation bid aligns with its broader efforts to strengthen regional partnerships. However, skeptics question whether either Tehran or Washington would welcome third-party involvement at this stage. The Pakistani government has not yet disclosed specific plans for its proposed diplomatic push.
