China Launches World-Class 307,000-Tonne VLCC in Dalian

China's shipbuilding industry reached a new milestone this week with the delivery of a 307,000-tonne very large crude carrier (VLCC) in Dalian, Liaoning Province. The vessel, handed over on Wednesday, March 25, represents China's independent innovation in maritime engineering and strengthens its position as a global leader in energy transportation infrastructure.

Designed and built entirely through domestic research and development, the VLCC meets stringent international performance standards while achieving 15% greater energy efficiency than previous models. Its advanced automated systems and optimized hull design enable safer navigation through key Asian shipping routes, including the Malacca Strait and South China Sea.

This achievement comes as China's shipbuilding output accounts for 47% of global production this year, with specialized vessels like this VLCC becoming strategic assets for energy security across Asia. Analysts note the carrier's delivery timing aligns with increased crude oil demand from emerging economies in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
