China Urges De-Escalation in Strait of Hormuz Amid Regional Diplomacy Push

China’s Special Envoy on Middle East Affairs Zhai Jun has intensified diplomatic efforts to stabilize tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. During his current regional tour, Zhai emphasized that “de-escalation remains paramount to safeguarding maritime security and international trade flows.”

The envoy’s shuttle diplomacy this week included meetings with officials from Iran, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. At a press briefing in Dubai, Zhai underscored China’s commitment to multilateral dialogue, stating: “All parties must prioritize constructive engagement over confrontation. The stability of this waterway concerns energy security worldwide.”

Analysts note that over 30% of seaborne oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz daily. Recent insurance premium hikes for vessels transiting the area have raised concerns among Asian energy importers. “China’s proactive stance aligns with its role as the largest crude importer,” said energy economist Li Wei. “Any prolonged disruption could ripple through Asian economies.”

While Zhai did not reference specific regional tensions, his tour follows reported incidents involving commercial vessels near Iranian territorial waters. The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed plans for follow-up consultations with APEC members and WTO stakeholders to address trade route security.
