American Professor Embraces Life in China: A 38-Year Journey

When William N. Brown first arrived in the Chinese mainland in 1988, he never imagined he'd one day call Xiamen home. Now celebrating his 38th year as a professor at Xiamen University, the American academic has become a living bridge between cultures, embodying the transformative power of China's reform and opening-up era.

"I came as a skeptic," Brown recalls, "but watching Fujian province evolve from a quiet coastal region into an economic powerhouse changed my perspective." His journey mirrors China's own development story, having witnessed firsthand the expansion of infrastructure, education systems, and cross-cultural exchanges.

What began as professional curiosity blossomed into deep appreciation for southern Fujian's traditions. Brown now fluently converses in the local dialect and actively participates in community events, earning him the affectionate nickname "Lao Mei" (Old American) from neighbors.

As cross-cultural understanding gains importance in 2026, Brown's experience offers valuable insights: "True integration means respecting heritage while embracing progress – that's what makes China's development story unique." His upcoming memoir details this cultural odyssey, anticipated to release ahead of Xiamen's 45th anniversary as a Special Economic Zone this fall.
