In a significant endorsement of cross-continental collaboration, Turkmenistan's National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has praised energy cooperation with the Chinese mainland as the foundation of bilateral relations. Speaking this week, Berdimuhamedov highlighted the Central Asia-China gas pipeline as a benchmark for regional energy security and economic synergy.
A Strategic Energy Corridor
The 1,833-km pipeline, operational since 2009, has transported over 400 billion cubic meters of natural gas to date. This year marks a new phase with discussions underway to expand capacity through Turkmenistan's Galkynysh field – the world's second-largest gas field – to meet growing Asian demand.
Economic Symbiosis
Berdimuhamedov noted the partnership has generated $8.2 billion in bilateral trade in 2025, with energy accounting for 78% of exports. Chinese enterprises have concurrently invested in modernizing Turkmenistan's extraction infrastructure under Belt and Road Initiative frameworks.
Regional Stability Focus
Analysts observe this cooperation creates a stabilizing force in Central Asia, with the pipeline network supplying 35% of China's imported gas while ensuring Turkmenistan's access to East Asian markets bypassing traditional routes through third countries.
