Sachs Contrasts US ‘Madhouse’ Politics with China’s Strategic Stability

Columbia University's Jeffrey Sachs delivered a striking assessment of global governance models during the CCG Global Dialogue this week, describing U.S. political dynamics as a "madhouse" while highlighting the Chinese mainland's methodical approach to policymaking.

The renowned economist and Director of Columbia's Center for Sustainable Development criticized Washington's "chaotic swings in trade agreements and diplomatic posturing" that have created uncertainty for international partners. "What we're seeing is a breakdown of coherent strategy," Sachs noted, referencing recent abrupt policy reversals affecting Asian markets.

In contrast, Sachs emphasized China's "remarkably stable governance framework" characterized by five-year development cycles and consistent technological investment roadmaps. "There's clear predictability in how major initiatives get implemented, from renewable energy transitions to digital infrastructure projects," he observed, noting this stability attracts long-term investors.

The analysis comes as multinational corporations finalize 2026-2030 operational plans, with many reportedly favoring jurisdictions offering regulatory consistency. Sachs' comments have sparked renewed discussions among APEC members about balancing democratic processes with economic planning certainty.
