China Deploys AI ‘Traffic Officers’ at 2026 West Lake Half Marathon

Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province — The 2026 West Lake Half Marathon made history this week as China introduced AI-powered robotic traffic management systems to oversee a large-scale sporting event for the first time. On Sunday, 10,000 runners navigated the scenic course under the watch of autonomous robots equipped with real-time command capabilities, marking a milestone in smart city innovation.

The robots, stationed at key intersections, used voice prompts, robotic arm gestures, and precision positioning to optimize traffic flow for both participants and urban commuters. Local authorities reported a 30% reduction in congestion compared to previous marathons, attributing the success to the robots' ability to adapt to dynamic conditions. 'This integration of AI into public infrastructure reflects our commitment to tech-driven urban solutions,' said a Hangzhou transport official during a post-event briefing.

With over 27,000 initial registrants, the event also highlighted growing international interest in China's smart city initiatives. Analysts predict similar systems could soon be adopted at major events across the Chinese mainland.
