Rare Northern Pig-Tailed Macaques Spotted in Yunnan Reserve, Signaling Conservation Success

A rare family of northern pig-tailed macaques has been documented for the first time in the Lancang River Nature Reserve, marking a milestone for biodiversity conservation in southwest China's Yunnan Province. The troop, captured on camera foraging and playing in shallow waters this month, represents one of the few recorded wild sightings of this national first-class protected species.

Listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the northern pig-tailed macaque population has faced habitat loss across Southeast Asia. Conservationists attribute this 2026 sighting to intensified local efforts to restore forest ecosystems and curb illegal logging through community-led initiatives.

"This discovery underscores Yunnan's growing role as a biodiversity stronghold," said a reserve spokesperson. The province, home to nearly 20% of China's protected wildlife species, has seen increased cross-border collaboration with neighboring countries on wildlife corridor projects since 2023.
