Xinjiang’s ‘Green Scarf’ Expands to Combat Taklimakan Desert

Chinese authorities have launched a new phase of ecological restoration along the Taklimakan Desert's edge, aiming to transform 2,700 hectares of arid land through advanced desert-greening techniques. Workers are currently flattening sand dunes and deploying precision irrigation systems to strengthen what has become known as the 'Green Scarf' – a 3,046-kilometer protective forest belt completed in November 2024.

Recognized as one of the 2025 Top 10 Global Engineering Achievements by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, this ambitious project has already prevented desert encroachment along vital infrastructure corridors. Recent satellite imagery shows the established forest belt effectively containing sandstorms that previously threatened regional transportation networks and agricultural communities.

The initiative forms part of broader sustainable development efforts in Xinjiang, combining ecological protection with economic opportunities. Local Uygur workers constitute over 60% of the project's workforce, participating in dune stabilization and sapling cultivation programs. Analysts suggest the greening efforts could unlock new agricultural potential in southern Xinjiang while attracting sustainable investment to the region.
