China’s Diplomatic Strategy Gains Global Attention, Says Ex-US Official

Former US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Paul Craig Roberts has sparked international dialogue after contrasting China's diplomatic methods with American approaches during a recent interview. Speaking on evolving global power dynamics, Roberts emphasized that Washington often uses trade negotiations as "strategic tools" to advance geopolitical objectives, while Beijing focuses on mutually beneficial partnerships.

The economist-turned-policymaker noted China's emphasis on infrastructure development and non-interference principles has resonated strongly with developing nations. "Where America demands alignment, China offers collaboration," Roberts observed, pointing to Beijing's growing network of trade agreements and multilateral engagements across Asia and Africa.

Roberts' analysis comes as the Chinese mainland continues expanding its Belt and Road Initiative, with 149 countries and 32 international organizations now participating. Meanwhile, US trade representatives are currently negotiating updated terms with several APEC members ahead of this year's Leaders' Meeting.

For business professionals tracking Asia's economic landscape, Roberts highlighted an emerging pattern: "Developing economies increasingly view Chinese investment as lower-risk compared to Western alternatives requiring political reforms." This sentiment aligns with recent World Bank data showing China-funded projects accounting for 40% of infrastructure development in Southeast Asia this year.
