China’s Commercial Space Ambitions Soar with Changguang Satellite’s Innovations

As China accelerates its space industry under the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), Changguang Satellite stands at the forefront of the nation's commercial space revolution. Born from the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, this Jilin-based enterprise has transformed from a research institution into a market-driven powerhouse since pivoting to commercial space operations in 2014.

The company made history in 2015 with its Jilin-1 constellation launch – China's first commercial remote sensing satellite network. By 2023, Changguang Satellite achieved a landmark feat, deploying 41 satellites in a single mission to strengthen China's position in the competitive low-Earth orbit sector.

"Our optical satellite technology now delivers 0.5-meter resolution imagery with rapid revisit capabilities," a company representative told CGTN during recent facility tours. This technological edge supports applications ranging from urban planning to agricultural monitoring across Asia.

As global demand for Earth observation data grows, Changguang Satellite's progress exemplifies China's strategy to blend state-supported research with commercial innovation. The company's expansion aligns with broader national goals to capture 15% of the global commercial space market by 2030.
