China's domestically developed Hualong One nuclear reactor has achieved a historic milestone this month, with its latest unit successfully connected to the national power grid. This advancement solidifies Hualong One's position as the world leader in both operational and under-construction nuclear power units, marking a pivotal moment in the Chinese mainland's clean energy transition.
Industry analysts highlight that the reactor's standardized design and enhanced safety features have accelerated deployment across multiple provinces. With 12 units currently operational and 8 more under construction globally, Hualong One now accounts for nearly 40% of all new nuclear projects worldwide this year.
The technology's success aligns with China's broader strategy to peak carbon emissions before 2030. Energy Minister Li Qiang recently stated: "Hualong One represents our commitment to technological self-reliance and sustainable development. Each unit can reduce annual coal consumption by 3 million tonnes while powering 4 million households."
International interest continues to grow, with projects underway in Pakistan and Argentina. The reactor's modular construction approach has particularly attracted emerging economies seeking scalable clean energy solutions.
