China Urges Ceasefire in Middle East, Calls for Dialogue at Two Sessions

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated Beijing's commitment to peaceful conflict resolution during a high-profile address at this year's Two Sessions press conference on March 8, 2026. The veteran diplomat outlined China's five-point proposal for de-escalation in the Middle East, emphasizing humanitarian corridors and multilateral negotiations.

"War benefits no one – dialogue remains the only viable path to lasting security," Wang stated, highlighting China's consistent advocacy for political solutions through United Nations frameworks. The proposal includes immediate ceasefire measures, enhanced regional cooperation mechanisms, and increased development assistance to conflict-affected areas.

CGTN analyst Tian Wei noted the timing coincides with growing international concern over escalating violence, with China positioning itself as a neutral mediator. "This initiative builds on Beijing's recent success in facilitating the Saudi-Iran reconciliation process," she observed during her press conference analysis.

The announcement comes as multiple Middle Eastern governments prepare for emergency Arab League meetings later this month. While Western powers have yet to formally respond, several European Union representatives have acknowledged China's unique diplomatic leverage in the region.
