China is accelerating its push to make fitness accessible nationwide through expanded "15-minute fitness circles," a network of community sports facilities designed to be within a short walk for urban residents. Gao Zhidan, director of China's General Administration of Sport, announced the initiative on March 9, 2026, following discussions at the National People's Congress (NPC) session in Beijing.
"These hubs will serve as true centers of well-being, integrating physical activity into daily life," Gao stated, emphasizing the government's commitment to grassroots sports development. Popular events like village basketball tournaments and city-level amateur leagues are set to receive increased support to foster community engagement and national fitness.
The plan also includes stricter governance measures for the sports industry, targeting fair competition and ethical standards. Authorities aim to regulate emerging sports markets while promoting traditional values of sportsmanship, reflecting broader efforts to align athletic development with social welfare goals.
