China Boasts World’s Largest Maritime Fleet and Port Network, NPC Deputy Reveals

China now operates the world's largest maritime fleet and most extensive network of world-class ports, according to Ni Di, a senior captain at China COSCO Shipping Corporation Ltd and deputy to the 14th National People's Congress. With 28 years of maritime experience spanning over 30 countries and regions, Ni emphasized the critical role of China's shipping industry in global trade during a recent address.

"China's maritime shipping business is ever more important," Ni stated, noting that 95% of the country's import and export cargo relies on maritime transport. China currently handles nearly one-third of global international maritime shipping volume, solidifying its position as a linchpin of worldwide commerce.

The network spans over 100 countries and regions, including all coastal partners in the Belt and Road Initiative. The newly operational Chancay Port in Peru has established direct shipping routes with Shanghai, which maintained its position as the world's busiest container port for the 16th consecutive year in 2025.

China's maritime workforce further underscores this growth, with over 2 million registered seafarers – including 970,000 serving on international routes. "This professional team is crucial to transforming China from a major shipping nation to a shipping powerhouse," Ni added, highlighting the sector's strategic importance in 2026's global economic landscape.
