China Doubles Down on Green Growth as West Retreats from Climate Pledges

As global climate efforts face uncertainty, China has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development through its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), with National People's Congress deputy Bao Xinhe emphasizing green innovation as a cornerstone of national strategy. The academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences told CGTN Africa this week that China will "actively advance dual-carbon goals" despite recent policy rollbacks in the United States and other Western economies.

Bao's remarks come amid growing scrutiny of climate policy divergences ahead of the 2026 UN Climate Change Conference. While European nations have delayed fossil fuel phase-out timelines and the U.S. Congress debates cutting clean energy subsidies, China recently launched the world's largest green hydrogen production facility in Inner Mongolia.

The 15th Five-Year Plan reportedly allocates $1.2 trillion for renewable energy infrastructure and carbon capture technology through 2030. Analysts suggest this could position China as the primary supplier of climate tech to developing nations through its South-South Cooperation framework.

For business leaders, the policy direction signals opportunities in electric vehicle supply chains and smart grid technologies. The Taiwan region's semiconductor manufacturers and Hong Kong-based financiers are already exploring partnerships with mainland green tech firms, according to industry reports.
