China’s NPC Debates Ethnic Unity Law Amid Diverse Representation

Beijing's Great Hall of the People hosted a striking scene this week as snow-dusted delegates from China's 56 ethnic groups gathered for the 2026 National People's Congress (NPC) session. Against the backdrop of falling flakes, discussions turned to the draft Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress — legislation poised to shape intercommunity relations across the nation.

Deputy Tashi Dorje, representing Tibetan communities, noted: 'In my county, we celebrate Lunar New Year with Han-style dumplings and Tibetan barley wine. This law recognizes such organic cultural blending as national treasures.' Uygur delegate Aygul Memet shared examples of multilingual schools in Xinjiang fostering cross-cultural understanding.

'Unity grows through shared daily life — markets where Hui vendors sell beef to Mongolian herders, classrooms where Zhuang and Yao children learn Mandarin together,' said Yi ethnic deputy Li Meiwen during committee debates.

The proposed legislation follows twelve months of public consultations, with lawmakers now refining provisions addressing economic cooperation between regions and preservation of intangible cultural heritage. As deliberations continue this week, the visual tapestry of traditional dress in the assembly hall underscores the complexity and vitality of China's multiethnic society.
