China is intensifying efforts to promote cross-cultural understanding through linguistic exchanges, according to Zhao Mei, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Speaking at the Members' Corridor during the ongoing fourth session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee in Beijing, Zhao emphasized the growing global fascination with Chinese characters as cultural ambassadors.
"Foreign scholars who experience our calligraphy workshops firsthand often describe it as unlocking a 3,000-year-old visual dialogue," Zhao revealed, sharing anecdotes of international academics who gained new perspectives through direct engagement with Chinese script. The researcher highlighted Beijing's commitment to maintaining open cultural channels, stating: "Our approach remains rooted in the principle of 'seeing is believing' – we welcome sincere exchanges that allow civilizations to learn from each other."
This cultural diplomacy push aligns with China's broader strategy of fostering people-to-people connections, particularly through educational programs and digital platforms that make Chinese characters more accessible to global learners. Analysts suggest such initiatives could strengthen international cooperation frameworks while preserving linguistic heritage.
