NPC Deputies Highlight Innovation, Equity in 2026 Government Work Report

As China's National People's Congress (NPC) continues its 2026 session, deputies are rallying behind the Government Work Report's vision for technological advancement and inclusive growth. The document, released this week, outlines ambitious plans to strengthen innovation ecosystems while ensuring economic benefits permeate all levels of society.

"This year's report strikes the crucial balance between cutting-edge development and social responsibility," said Li Wei, an NPC deputy from Shenzhen's tech sector. "The commitment to allocate 2.8% of GDP to R&D will accelerate our quantum computing and AI initiatives while maintaining green development targets."

Rural development emerged as another focal point, with deputy Wang Xiaoling from Guizhou province noting: "The pledge to extend high-speed internet to 98% of villages by 2027 isn't just about infrastructure—it's about creating equal opportunities for our next generation."

The report's emphasis on cross-strait cooperation has drawn particular attention, with proposals to expand economic partnerships between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region. Several deputies highlighted plans to simplify procedures for overseas investors from Hong Kong and Macao seeking to establish tech startups in mainland innovation hubs.

As debates continue through March, analysts predict the 2026 policy blueprint will significantly influence Asia's economic landscape, particularly in renewable energy sectors and digital currency development.
