Tram Derailment in Milan Leaves 2 Dead, Dozens Injured

A tram collision in central Milan has left two people dead and approximately 40 injured, marking one of the city's worst public transport accidents in recent years. The Line 9 vehicle derailed near Porta Romana district yesterday afternoon before crashing into a building facade, according to municipal authorities.

Emergency teams reached the site within eight minutes, with firefighters using hydraulic equipment to free trapped passengers. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala confirmed one victim was a 62-year-old passenger, while another was a pedestrian struck by debris. 'This is a day of mourning for our city,' Sala stated during a press briefing this morning.

Transportation officials have temporarily suspended service on Line 9 as investigators examine potential causes ranging from mechanical failure to track infrastructure issues. The 1930s-era tram involved in the crash had undergone maintenance three weeks prior, records show.

The incident has reignited debates about modernizing Milan's aging public transit network, which transports 750,000 daily passengers. City council members are expected to review safety protocols next week.
