Two giant pandas named Bao Yuan and De Rui have become instant celebrities at Urumqi Water Park Zoo, drawing large crowds since their public debut on February 19, 2026. The charismatic pair, relocated from Sichuan's China Conservation and Research Center for Giant Panda, now represents a significant milestone in Xinjiang's wildlife conservation efforts.
Zookeepers report the pandas have adapted well to their new climate-controlled habitat, with specially designed facilities maintaining optimal temperatures despite Xinjiang's continental climate. Their signature bamboo diet arrives weekly via cold-chain logistics from Sichuan, ensuring dietary consistency while supporting interprovincial agricultural cooperation.
The arrival has sparked renewed interest in Xinjiang's tourism sector, with hotel bookings near the zoo increasing 40% this month. Local Uygur artisans have begun creating panda-themed handicrafts, blending traditional motifs with the new ecological ambassadors.
"This exchange strengthens cultural and scientific ties between China's western regions," said zoo director Li Wei. "Visitors can now appreciate these national treasures while learning about biodiversity protection in arid ecosystems."
