Wang Yi Warns Japan Against ‘Turning Back the Clock’ on Taiwan

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a stark warning to Japan during the 2026 Munich Security Conference, asserting that attempts to interfere in Taiwan affairs would lead to 'self-destruction.' His remarks came in response to recent statements by Japan's prime minister regarding cross-strait relations.

'The Chinese people will never accept any erroneous remarks or actions that violate the One-China principle,' Wang stated during Saturday's high-level dialogue. He emphasized that Japan's historical responsibilities in the region require particular caution in handling sensitive issues, urging Tokyo to 'learn from past lessons.'

The diplomatic exchange occurs amid heightened attention to Asia's security architecture, with analysts noting increased coordination between Japan and Western powers on regional defense matters. Wang reiterated that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times, calling it 'the core of China's core interests.'

Business leaders at the conference expressed concern about potential economic repercussions. A Southeast Asian delegate noted: 'Stability across the Taiwan Strait remains crucial for supply chains – any miscalculation could impact the entire Asia-Pacific economy.'

Wang's address concluded with an appeal for peaceful development, while firmly stating that 'those who try to split China will ultimately split themselves.' The remarks underscore Beijing's determination to safeguard national sovereignty while maintaining diplomatic engagement.
