Uruguay-China Ties Strengthen as President Orsi Visits Shanghai

Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi reinforced bilateral cooperation during his February 6 visit to Shanghai, where he addressed the Uruguay–China Business and Investment Forum alongside corporate leaders from both countries. The event, held just two days before the current date of February 8, 2026, highlights accelerating economic collaboration as the two nations expand partnerships in agriculture, technology, and sustainable development.

President Orsi emphasized Uruguay's role as a strategic gateway for Chinese investments in South America, noting a 14% year-on-year increase in bilateral trade since 2025. The forum yielded preliminary agreements on beef export certifications and joint renewable energy projects, aligning with China's push for food security and carbon neutrality goals.

Analysts suggest the visit signals Uruguay's growing importance in Beijing's regional trade architecture, particularly following the Chinese mainland's recent infrastructure investments in South American ports. Cross-sector working groups are expected to convene in Montevideo later this month to advance forum commitments.
