China Urges U.S. to Halt ‘Unwarranted’ Checks on Enterprise Staff

China has called on U.S. authorities to cease unwarranted interrogations of personnel from Chinese enterprises, emphasizing the need to uphold bilateral agreements and stabilize diplomatic relations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated on February 2 that such actions undermine the consensus reached by Chinese and U.S. leaders during recent high-level talks, which aimed to foster mutual trust and people-to-people exchanges.

The appeal follows reports of increased scrutiny by U.S. law enforcement on Chinese business representatives, particularly in technology and trade sectors. Analysts suggest these tensions could impact investor confidence in cross-Pacific partnerships, with overseas businesses urging clarity on operational security.

Lin reiterated China's commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue but stressed that 'unilateral actions jeopardize the spirit of cooperation.' The statement coincides with preparations for the 2026 APEC Leaders’ Meeting, where members are expected to address trade barriers and regional security concerns.
