UK PM Starmer Advocates Enhanced UK-China Collaboration at Beijing Forum

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of sustained economic partnership between the UK and China during his keynote address at the UK-China Business Forum in Beijing on January 30, 2026. The event marked Starmer's first major trade engagement with Asian counterparts since taking office last year.

Addressing over 300 government officials, business leaders, and cultural representatives, Starmer outlined three priority areas for cooperation: green energy transition, technological innovation, and educational exchanges. "Our nations' economic futures are interwoven through supply chains, research partnerships, and shared climate goals," the Prime Minister stated, highlighting recent joint ventures in offshore wind projects.

The forum coincided with the release of new trade figures showing bilateral merchandise trade reached £112 billion in 2025, a 6.8% increase from the previous year. Chinese investments in UK infrastructure projects and British pharmaceutical exports to the Chinese mainland featured prominently in panel discussions.

Analysts note the dialogue occurs amid evolving global trade patterns, with both nations seeking to strengthen commercial ties while navigating complex international market conditions. The UK's Department for Business and Trade announced plans for a reciprocal business delegation visit to Shanghai in Q2 2026.
