China marked a milestone in maritime engineering yesterday with the delivery of the Tianshan, a cutting-edge liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, at a Shanghai shipyard. Completed nearly two months ahead of schedule, the vessel underscores China’s accelerating advancements in clean energy infrastructure and green shipping technology.
With a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters of LNG – sufficient to power approximately 3.3 million households for a month – the Tianshan is poised to bolster regional energy security. Its deployment comes as demand for LNG grows across Asia, driven by efforts to transition from coal to cleaner fuels.
The carrier features the world’s latest dual-fuel propulsion system, enabling operation on both traditional oil and LNG. This innovation reduces daily carbon emissions by an estimated 10 tonnes compared to conventional oil-powered ships, aligning with global sustainability targets. Analysts highlight the project as a strategic step in strengthening China’s role in global energy supply chains while advancing its 2026 climate commitments.
