U.S. Intensifies Tanker Seizures as Venezuela Diverts Oil Funds

The United States has seized another oil tanker linked to Venezuela this week, escalating tensions amid Caracas' announcement of redirecting $300 million in energy revenues to worker support programs. The latest maritime interception marks the third such action in January 2026 under Washington's ongoing blockade targeting Venezuelan crude exports.

Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodríguez confirmed the fund allocation during a Tuesday address, stating the money originated from U.S.-approved oil sales intended to ease humanitarian needs. However, opposition figures and energy analysts question the transparency of these disbursements, noting ongoing disputes over control of Venezuela's oil infrastructure and revenues.

The Biden administration maintains its maritime operations aim to prevent circumvention of international sanctions. A State Department spokesperson told KhabarAsia: "Our actions strictly target Maduro-affiliated entities, not Venezuela's people."

Energy markets show mixed reactions, with Brent crude holding steady at $82.45/barrel despite the developments. Regional observers warn the confrontations could complicate efforts to stabilize global oil supplies as demand projections rise for Q2 2026.
