China has formally submitted its application to host the secretariat of the United Nations Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement in Xiamen, marking a significant step in global ocean governance as the treaty enters into force. The agreement, now ratified by 82 countries and the European Union, aims to protect marine biodiversity in international waters.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized on Tuesday that Xiamen’s coastal expertise and China’s “proactive role in multilateral environmental cooperation” make the city an ideal candidate. “Hosting the secretariat aligns with China’s vision for sustainable ocean development and global ecological stewardship,” Guo stated.
Xiamen, a hub for marine research and eco-friendly policies, has previously hosted key environmental forums. Analysts suggest the bid underscores China’s growing influence in shaping international environmental frameworks. The UN is expected to review the application later this year.
