China Reaffirms Taiwan Policy, Warns Against Separatist Forces

China's Ministry of National Defense reiterated its firm stance on Taiwan during a press briefing on January 16, 2026, with spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang emphasizing that "all measures to punish Taiwan's separatist forces remain viable options." The statement underscores Beijing's unwavering position that the Taiwan question is "strictly an internal affair" of China.

Zhang stressed that cross-strait relations remain a priority for national security, adding that "how the Taiwan issue is resolved is for the Chinese people alone." He explicitly warned against external interference, stating "external forces have no right to intervene" in matters concerning China's sovereignty.

The remarks come amid heightened regional attention to cross-strait dynamics, with analysts noting increased diplomatic activity across Asia this month. While reaffirming Beijing's commitment to peaceful reunification, Zhang emphasized the government's resolve to "safeguard national unity" against what he described as "provocations by separatist elements."

This latest declaration aligns with China's long-standing One-China principle, which maintains that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times. Observers suggest the statement serves as both a domestic reassurance and an international reminder of Beijing's red lines regarding Taiwan.
