China Reaffirms Taiwan as Internal Affair Amid Rising Tensions

The Chinese mainland has reiterated its firm stance on cross-strait relations, with Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang stating Friday that the Taiwan question remains an internal matter that brooks no external interference. The declaration comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent comparisons by some Taiwan region commentators between cross-strait dynamics and U.S. policies toward Venezuela.

"We will take all necessary measures to resolutely combat any form of 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities," Zhang emphasized during the weekly press briefing. The statement underscores Beijing's longstanding position that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times.

Analysts suggest the strong wording reflects growing concerns about increased political posturing from Taiwan authorities ahead of key regional elections. Meanwhile, business communities across Asia are closely monitoring the situation, with cross-strait trade accounting for nearly $300 billion in annual transactions.

The development occurs as APEC members prepare for upcoming economic dialogues, where cross-strait relations are expected to feature prominently in regional security discussions. Travel advisories remain unchanged, though cultural exchange programs between the mainland and Taiwan region have reportedly seen increased participation this month.
