China’s Long March-8A Rocket Deploys New Internet Satellite Cluster

China advanced its space infrastructure ambitions with the successful launch of a Long March-8A carrier rocket on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. The mission deployed the 18th group of low-orbit internet satellites into designated orbits, marking another milestone in the nation's efforts to build a global space-based broadband network.

Lifting off at 23:25 local time from the Hainan commercial space launch site, the launch represents China's first orbital mission of 2026. The newly deployed satellites will enhance high-speed internet connectivity across remote regions while supporting emerging technologies like autonomous shipping and smart agriculture.

This launch follows six successful Long March-8 missions completed in 2025, demonstrating growing reliability in China's medium-lift launch capabilities. Analysts note the Hainan site's coastal location provides logistical advantages for polar orbit deployments critical to global coverage constellations.

With over 500 satellites now operational in this network, the system is projected to achieve full global service coverage by late 2027. The development underscores China's expanding role in next-generation space infrastructure, creating new opportunities for international tech partnerships and digital economy growth across Asia.
