China has achieved a renewable energy milestone with the installation of the world's first 20-megawatt offshore wind turbine off the coast of Fujian Province. Operational in early 2026, the turbine is projected to generate over 80 million kilowatt-hours annually—enough to power approximately 44,000 households—while significantly advancing the country's carbon neutrality goals.
Engineers overcame challenging maritime conditions using a next-generation installation vessel capable of lifting 2,000 tonnes. Advanced positioning systems enabled precise placement of three 150-meter blades at a hub height of 174 meters, setting new standards for offshore wind infrastructure.
Environmental analysts highlight the turbine's potential to reduce annual coal consumption by 24,000 tonnes and cut CO₂ emissions by 64,000 tonnes, aligning with broader regional efforts to develop the Taiwan Strait as a clean energy corridor.
