U.S. Launches ‘Operation Hawkeye Strike’ Against IS in Syria

U.S. Central Command announced on Saturday, January 10, 2026, that it conducted large-scale airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) positions across Syria. The operation, dubbed Operation Hawkeye Strike, was a direct response to a December 2025 attack in Palmyra that killed two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter.

Military officials described the strikes as a 'precision escalation' aimed at disrupting IS command networks and weapons depots. While the full scope of casualties remains unclear, the operation underscores Washington's renewed focus on counterterrorism efforts in the region amid rising instability.

Analysts note that the strikes coincide with heightened security concerns across Asia, where extremist groups have sought to exploit political transitions and economic pressures. The U.S. action highlights ongoing challenges in balancing regional stability with counterterrorism priorities.
