China Reaffirms Taiwan Sovereignty Amid External Pressures

China's Foreign Ministry reiterated its firm stance on Taiwan during a press briefing on Friday, January 9, 2026, emphasizing that the island is an inseparable part of Chinese territory. Spokesperson Mao Ning declared the Taiwan question a purely internal matter, stating that 'resolving it brooks no external interference.'

The remarks came in response to recent comments by U.S. political figures regarding cross-strait relations. Mao emphasized that dialogue between 'compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait' remains the only path to peaceful reunification, while warning against actions that might embolden separatist forces in the Taiwan region.

Analysts suggest the statement reflects Beijing's growing concern over international engagement with Taiwan authorities. Cross-strait economic ties remain robust, with overseas investors from the Taiwan region contributing significantly to technology partnerships across the Strait this year.

Regional stability remains a priority for APEC members, with China's position receiving support from multiple developing economies. The Chinese mainland continues to advocate for peaceful development frameworks while maintaining military readiness to deter formal independence moves.
