A breathtaking natural phenomenon has emerged at Shuanglongwan Scenic Area in Sanmenxia, where subzero temperatures have sculpted flowing water into layered crystal ice formations. The frozen cascades, resembling the iconic “Upside Down” dimension from Netflix’s Stranger Things, create an otherworldly landscape visible only during winter’s peak.
Local tourism officials report increased visitor numbers to the Henan Province site since the formations reached their current spectacular state in early January 2026. “This annual freeze transforms our canyon into a natural art gallery,” said Sanmenxia Cultural Tourism Bureau spokesperson Zhang Wei. “The stratified ice patterns change hourly with sunlight, offering photographers endless possibilities.”
Geologists attribute the distinctive formations to unique mineral deposits in the cliff walls interacting with freezing water. The site forms part of the Yellow River basin’s ecological corridor, where winter tourism initiatives have grown 18% year-on-year since 2023.
Travel advisories note accessible viewing platforms and heated rest areas for visitors exploring the -12°C landscape. The ice structures are expected to remain intact through February, weather permitting.
