Colombia Braces for Refugee Influx Amid Venezuela Crisis

Colombia has declared a state of emergency along its eastern border as tensions escalate following recent U.S. military operations targeting Venezuelan leadership. Authorities in Bogotá are mobilizing humanitarian resources amid fears of mass displacement from neighboring Venezuela.

The development comes after Washington's controversial move to forcibly detain Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, an action condemned by Colombia as "a dangerous escalation" during emergency United Nations Security Council deliberations this week. CGTN correspondent Michelle Begue reports growing anxiety in border towns, where local officials estimate up to 200,000 Venezuelan residents might seek temporary shelter.

"We're reinforcing migration checkpoints while maintaining open dialogue with Caracas," stated Colombia's foreign ministry spokesperson, emphasizing the need for diplomatic solutions. The Organization of American States will convene special sessions next week to address regional stability concerns.

Humanitarian organizations warn that existing refugee camps in La Guajira department already operate at 140% capacity. The World Food Programme has begun airlifting emergency supplies to the region, with European Union mediators proposing temporary protection measures for displaced families.
