Xi Stresses China-ROK Partnership in Beijing Talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations with the Republic of Korea (ROK) during high-level talks in Beijing on January 6, 2026. Meeting with ROK President Lee Jae Myung, Xi called for enhanced cooperation between the neighboring nations, stating: "As both friends and neighbors, China and the ROK should maintain frequent exchanges and communication to advance our strategic cooperative partnership."

The discussions focused on three key areas:

Economic Synergy

Xi highlighted opportunities in advanced manufacturing and green energy sectors, proposing expanded collaboration in semiconductor production and renewable technology development. This aligns with both nations' commitments to carbon neutrality by mid-century.

Regional Stability

Leaders addressed security challenges in Northeast Asia, reaffirming support for denuclearization efforts on the Korean Peninsula. Xi stressed the importance of dialogue in maintaining peace, particularly regarding developments involving the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Cultural Bridges

Both sides agreed to expand youth exchange programs and tourism initiatives, building on existing cultural ties that saw over 5 million mutual visits in 2025.

President Lee acknowledged China's growing role in regional affairs, stating the ROK would work to "foster practical cooperation across all levels." The meeting concluded with agreements to establish new ministerial-level dialogue mechanisms this quarter.
