Colombian political commentator Fernando Munoz Bernal has raised urgent concerns about the United States' recent military intervention in Venezuela during a January 2026 interview with CGTN. The remarks come just two days after Washington initiated operations on January 3, marking the first major military action in Latin America this year.
"Every U.S. intervention creates the same tragic cycle – destabilization, poverty, and generations of suffering," Bernal stated, citing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as examples. "Why should Venezuela's story end differently?"
The commentary emerges as regional governments prepare for emergency talks through the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Economic analysts warn the escalation could impact global oil markets, with Venezuela holding the world's largest proven reserves.
While U.S. officials maintain the operation aims to "restore democratic processes," Bernal countered: "Military solutions have never built lasting peace. We must learn from Libya's collapse and Syria's decade-long crisis."
As humanitarian organizations monitor displacement risks, the international community awaits China and Russia's responses through UN security council channels this week.
