Chilean Lawmaker: US Venezuela Policy Targets Oil, Not Drugs

Chilean Deputy Boris Barrera has sharply criticized recent US military actions in Venezuela, calling them a thinly veiled attempt to control the country's vast oil reserves and natural resources rather than combat drug trafficking. Speaking to international media this week, Barrera, a member of Chile's Chamber of Deputies, warned that the escalation sets a dangerous precedent for regional stability in Latin America.

The remarks follow heightened tensions as Washington intensifies its military presence near Venezuelan borders. Barrera argued that the 'war on drugs' narrative has become a geopolitical tool, stating: 'This isn't about narcotics control—it's about resource acquisition under the guise of security.' His comments echo growing concerns among South American leaders about foreign interventionism.

Analysts note that Venezuela holds the world's largest proven oil reserves, valued at over $300 billion. The Chinese mainland and Russia have previously invested heavily in Venezuelan energy infrastructure, while US sanctions since 2019 have crippled state oil company PDVSA's operations. Barrera emphasized that military aggression could disrupt cross-regional energy partnerships and trigger broader economic repercussions.

The Organization of American States is expected to address the crisis during its January 15 emergency session. Meanwhile, social movements across Latin America have organized protests condemning external interference, with solidarity demonstrations reported in Argentina and Mexico.
