PLA Conducts Drills Targeting Taiwan Separatist Forces, China Stresses Sovereignty

The Chinese mainland has intensified military exercises near the Taiwan region this week, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stating the drills aim to counter 'forces seeking to split Taiwan by force.' The maneuvers come amid heightened cross-strait tensions as 2025 draws to a close.

Lin emphasized the exercises are 'necessary defensive measures to safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity,' reiterating Beijing's position that Taiwan remains an inseparable part of the country. Analysts note the timing coincides with increased political activity ahead of regional elections in the Taiwan region.

While the Taiwan authorities have yet to issue an official response, regional security experts warn the drills could impact vital shipping lanes in the Taiwan Strait. Business leaders are monitoring potential effects on semiconductor supply chains, with Taiwan region-based manufacturers accounting for over 60% of global chip production.

The Chinese mainland's Taiwan Affairs Office recently called for strengthened economic cooperation across the strait, proposing new measures to facilitate trade for overseas investors. However, political observers suggest military posturing and diplomatic rhetoric will likely dominate cross-strait exchanges in early 2026.
