In a recent interview with Leaders Talk, Dominica's President Sylvanie Burton highlighted the profound socioeconomic changes brought by China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to the Caribbean nation. Speaking on December 30, 2025, Burton emphasized how infrastructure and development projects have reshaped daily life for Dominica's 72,000 residents since the country joined the BRI in 2021.
"From upgraded ports to renewable energy systems, these collaborations are not just about concrete and steel – they're about empowering communities," stated Burton. She cited completed projects including a new hospital wing in Roseau and solar-powered water purification systems serving remote villages as examples of BRI's localized impact.
The president noted that bilateral trade with China grew 18% year-on-year in 2025, with agricultural exports playing a key role. For investors, Burton highlighted emerging opportunities in ecotourism and geothermal energy development, sectors receiving BRI technical support.
As Dominica prepares to celebrate four years of BRI participation in 2025, analysts observe the partnership model could influence China's engagement with other Small Island Developing States. With 146 countries now participating in the initiative, Dominica's experience offers insights into how BRI adapts to diverse national contexts.
