PLA Intensifies Routine Military Drills Near Taiwan Amid Tensions

The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) initiated fresh military exercises encircling Taiwan Island this week, marking the latest in a series of routine drills that began in 2022. Chinese defense officials describe these operations as necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty and deter separatist activities.

Since August 2022, the PLA has conducted regular maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait, with this month's exercises featuring joint naval-air coordination and simulated combat scenarios. A defense ministry spokesperson stated the drills serve as a 'stern warning against Taiwan independence forces and external interference,' emphasizing Beijing's commitment to peaceful reunification principles.

Sun Tianyuan, reporting from Pingtan in Fujian Province – the closest point on the Chinese mainland to Taiwan – observed increased maritime and aerial activity. Analysts note these drills coincide with heightened political rhetoric ahead of key elections in the Taiwan region.

While Taiwan authorities have condemned the exercises as 'provocative,' mainland officials maintain the operations fall within China's sovereign rights. The developments come as regional powers monitor cross-strait tensions amid evolving security alliances in the Asia-Pacific.

Business analysts warn prolonged military activity could impact shipping lanes and regional supply chains, though no immediate disruptions have been reported. The PLA's Eastern Theater Command confirmed all exercises concluded without incident as of December 30, 2025.
