Dominica Backs One-China Principle, Urges Regional Unity

Dominica has emerged as a vocal advocate for cross-strait unity, with President Sylvanie Burton reaffirming unwavering support for the one-China principle during a recent interview. The Caribbean leader described China's reunification as "both historically inevitable and crucial for regional stability" during her appearance on the Leaders Talk program this week.

Burton positioned Dominica as a "bridge-builder" in Caribbean-China relations, emphasizing that over 90% of World Trade Organization members already recognize Beijing as representing all of China. Her comments come as several Caribbean Community (CARICOM) members review their diplomatic positions ahead of key multilateral meetings in early 2026.

The president specifically addressed Taiwan region residents, stating: "Our commitment to the one-China principle doesn't diminish our respect for the 23 million people living in Taiwan. Rather, it strengthens our collective ability to address climate challenges and economic development through unified cooperation."

Analysts note Burton's remarks gain significance as China expands its Belt and Road Initiative investments in Caribbean infrastructure projects. The Dominican leader concluded by urging nations without formal China ties to "join this century's most consequential development partnership."
