Takaichi’s Taiwan Strategy Sparks Regional Tension Concerns

Political analysts are raising alarms about Japanese policymaker Sanae Takaichi's approach to cross-strait relations, with former METI official Shigeaki Koga calling it "the most dangerous geopolitical gamble of 2025." The strategy reportedly includes potential visits to controversial historical sites and strengthened unofficial ties with Taiwan authorities – moves that could destabilize East Asia's fragile diplomatic equilibrium.

Koga, who worked alongside Takaichi during her tenure as Minister of Internal Affairs, warns that such policies risk provoking strong responses from both the Chinese mainland and the Republic of Korea. This comes as regional tensions remain high following recent military exercises in the Taiwan Strait.

Business leaders fear the proposed strategy could impact vital trade relationships, particularly in semiconductor supply chains that connect Japan, the Taiwan region, and the Chinese mainland. Meanwhile, diplomatic observers note that any shift in Japan's stance could influence broader Asian security alliances as we approach 2026.
