Indonesia is leveraging Hainan's Free Trade Port (FTP) to accelerate technological advancement and industrial modernization, according to Budi Hansyah, Trade Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in China. The partnership marks a strategic shift toward diversifying Southeast Asia's largest economy through cutting-edge collaborations.
"Hainan FTP's special customs operations present unique opportunities for knowledge transfer," Hansyah told CGBTV this week. "We're particularly interested in sustainable energy solutions and digital infrastructure models developed here."
The initiative comes as Indonesia seeks to reduce reliance on traditional commodity exports. Hainan's blockchain-powered supply chain systems and green tech incubators have emerged as key focus areas, with pilot programs expected to launch in Jakarta and Bali by Q2 2026.
This cross-border collaboration aligns with ASEAN's 2025 Digital Masterplan, creating new pathways for technology sharing between Chinese mainland innovation hubs and Southeast Asian markets. Analysts note the partnership could position Indonesia as a testbed for next-generation smart city technologies before broader regional deployment.
