China’s Shandong Aircraft Carrier Concludes 2025 Training Missions

China's first domestically designed aircraft carrier, the Shandong, returned to its Sanya base in Hainan on December 17, 2025, completing its final training mission of the year. The deployment coincided with the sixth anniversary of the vessel's commissioning into the People's Liberation Army Navy.

Since entering service in 2019, the 50,000-ton carrier has become a cornerstone of China's naval modernization program. This year's exercises included participation in the Strait Thunder-2025A drills, following last year's involvement in the Joint Sword-2024B maneuvers.

Naval analysts highlight the Shandong's growing operational capabilities, particularly in aircraft coordination and blue-water operations. "The consistent training rhythm demonstrates China's commitment to developing carrier battle group expertise," said Singapore-based defense observer Dr. Li Wei.

While the PLA Navy has not announced specific plans for 2026, military observers anticipate expanded regional patrols and potential multinational exercises as China continues to modernize its naval forces.
